CRISIL has developed five indices for open-ended mutual funds. The indices serve as benchmarks for the mutual fund  industry as well as for comparing performance of mutual funds vis-a-vis other investment avenues. These Indices
also help in understanding the development of the mutual fund industry in terms of depth and performance.  The Indices are:

General Equity Funds Index comprising 33 scrips
General Debt Funds Index comprising 28 scrips
Balanced Funds Index comprising 20 scrips
Gilt Funds Index comprising 16 scrips and
Liquid Funds Index comprising 19 scrips

The CRISIL indices include all open-ended funds that do not have a lock-in period for investors.

The indices are based on each fund's outstanding units at the end of each month and its daily NAV. Entry and exit loads are not taken into consideration.

The index computation is done daily and the index constituents are rebalanced every month. The monthly rebalancing also allows for the changes in the weightage of the funds in the index and also the entry or exit of funds from the universe of fund schemes. Close-ended funds converting into open-ended funds are also included in the monthly rebalancing of the index
portfolio.

The index calculations have been done using the chain-link method, where past values are used on a daily rolling basis to determine present values. The NAVs used are adjusted to account for corporate events such as dividend declarations, rights or bonus issues.
